Fall 2026 made one thing clear from the first shows: outerwear is no longer the finishing layer, it is the look. Across New York, Milan and Paris, designers sent out coats with enough presence to carry an entire outfit, from sweeping maxis to sculptural shorter cuts with strong shoulders.

On the street, the formula is simpler than the runway suggests. One long wool coat, worn open over whatever is already in the wardrobe, does the work of a whole styled look. The versions gaining the most traction right now are belted and hooded: a tie waist brings shape back after seasons of boxy volume, while an oversized hood adds drama without any extra effort.

The smartest buy is the coat that works twice. A double-faced wool wrap in a neutral shade covers the commute, the dinner and the weekend, while a red or checked version is the personality piece for days when the rest of the outfit stays quiet. Colour is the season's easiest risk: burgundy, royal purple and deep red all read as neutrals once they are in wool.

After seasons of cropped jackets and casual layering, the long coat is back as the foundation of the look rather than its finishing touch. Across the AW26 runways — Saint Laurent's sweeping leather and wool overcoats, Prada's structured layers, Burberry's sharpened trenches — outerwear was designed to define silhouette, proportion and presence.

The street has already caught up. What makes this coat moment different from previous ones is its range: the same instinct that puts a floor-skimming cashmere overcoat over tailoring also puts a blanket-lined work jacket over a flannel. The coat does the talking, and everything underneath can stay quiet.

Buy one good one and the rest of the wardrobe falls into place. At the top end that means archival wool with a story; at the entry end it means a workwear icon that has survived seventy years without changing its mind.

If coats are the headline, bags are the season's quiet consensus. The shapes worth knowing fall into a short list: a soft suede shoulder bag or tote, a slouchy leather hobo, a long east-west shoulder bag, a structured top handle carried in the hand, and the returning flap bag. The colours are even shorter: burgundy and deep brown.

Burgundy has now fully crossed over from accent to neutral. Marie Claire's fall handbag report calls it the season's defining shade, and every house from Ferragamo to Chanel showed it. The appeal is practical as much as visual: oxblood and dried cherry sit comfortably next to camel, chocolate, charcoal and black, then turn interesting against pale blue or olive.

Suede is the material doing the most work. Its brushed nap absorbs light instead of bouncing it back, so a chocolate or espresso suede bag looks warmer and softer than polished calf, and sits naturally beside tweed, flannel and cashmere. The rule is to keep the colour dark: chocolate, espresso, deep olive and black forgive a whole season of wear, while pale suede shows every mark.

Tailoring expanded this season, but not in the way the last oversized cycle did. Jackets got longer and shoulders broader, trousers widened through the leg — yet the whole thing reads softer, more fluid, less like armour. Gucci leaned into relaxed suiting with broad shoulders; Prada kept it restrained, with elongated jackets and a lighter hand.

The practical takeaway is a suit that prioritises presence over precision. Structure without rigidity: a jacket that fits your actual shoulders, trousers with a real break at the shoe, and nothing strangling your arms. It is the clearest sign yet that the skinny-suit era is fully over.

Style it the way the runways did — a soft knit or an open-collar shirt underneath, a loafer instead of a sneaker — and the suit stops feeling like a uniform and starts feeling like a point of view.

The party season has started early, and this year it splits into two clear moods. The first is velvet: rich, tactile and unmistakably festive in black, midnight blue and burgundy, cut into minis and midis that need little more than metallic accessories. The second is shine: all-over sequins, tone-on-tone crystals and metallic surfaces that catch light in motion.

The trick to wearing either is restraint everywhere else. A crystal-trimmed mini wants a bare leg and a minimal shoe; a sequined slip dress wants simple hair and no competing sparkle. The most modern party looks this season pair the loudest dress with the quietest styling, letting one surface do all the talking.

For New Year's Eve, the dial turns further toward full sequin and fluid, floor-length silhouettes. For the office party or a Christmas dinner, velvet and a single crystal detail are the safer route to the same feeling: dressed, deliberate, and done in one piece.

Thin merino still has its place under a jacket, but the knit doing the work this fall is big, textured and worn as the outer layer. Fisherman knits, Aran cables, chunky shawl collars — wool with real character, undyed, slightly rustic, a little bit hairy.

It is the antidote to seasons of flat, logo-led dressing. A heavy cable knit in cream against dark brown corduroy, or a shawl-collar cardigan thrown over a chambray shirt and jeans, carries a whole outfit without needing anything else to perform.

The styling rule is simple: let the knit be the loudest thing you are wearing. Keep the rest restrained — dark denim or wool trousers, a loafer or a boot — and the texture does all the talking.

Below the coat line, November's most interesting move is texture. Searches for suede pants rose 125% from August to September, the fastest climber in the season's early fall data, and plaid skirts followed close behind. The idea is simple: swap one flat piece for one tactile one and the whole outfit gains depth before a single accessory is added.

The plaid skirt has grown up. This season it is longer, pleated and deliberately polished: a midi length worn with a fine knit for the day and a sheer layer when the mood changes. The print that once read as school uniform now reads as librarian polish, especially cinched with a belt and grounded by boots.

Velvet completes the trio below the waist, arriving in trousers and skirts as well as dresses. A fluid velvet pant in a deep shade does the same job as a sequin dress after dark, but with far less effort: pair it with a knit and the texture carries the evening.

This week belongs to the archives. New Balance is having a moment on two fronts at once: the Whitaker Group's deconstructed 2010 dropped yesterday in two frayed-suede colorways, and COMME des GARÇONS HOMME's runway 1890A hits retail today, a moc-toe runner polished up for tailored wardrobes.

The through-line is sneakers that behave like proper shoes. The 1890A wraps its technical base in a single clean apron upper; the Whitaker 2010 leans the other way, with raw edges and exposed stitching that make each pair feel worn in from day one. Both sit easily next to wool trousers and an overcoat, which is exactly the point.

Third on the sheet is the sleeper: Story mfg. and ASICS revive a '90s hiking archive in hiking-blanket check, with a trail sole borrowed from the GEL-FujiTrabuco 7. It lands November 11 at Story mfg., November 20 at ASICS — the rambling shoe for a season that is, frankly, about walking everywhere in a very good coat.
