American classicism wins
5/5The Night Belonged to Ralph Lauren
There was a pleasing symmetry to Monday night at the American Museum of Natural History. The man who has dressed American ambition for nearly six decades was named American Menswear Designer of the Year, beating Public School New York, Thom Browne, Todd Snyder and Willy Chavarria.
Matt Damon and Denim Tears founder Tremaine Emory presented the award to Lauren, 87, who received a standing ovation. It was a reminder that in a season full of reinvention, the most radical thing on offer can be continuity done beautifully.
The carpet told the same story in miniature. Shaboozey wore Ralph Lauren, Matt Damon wore Ralph Lauren, and the room's loudest looks still bowed to tailoring. Classicism is not playing defence this season. It is setting the terms.
- Winner confirmed by Fashionista and the CFDA's own winners announcement.
- Nominees: Public School New York, Ralph Lauren, Thom Browne, Todd Snyder, Willy Chavarria.
The closest buyable echo of the night's winning tailoring: hand-tailored, soft-shouldered, endlessly wearable.
