Mule Mania: SZA's VANSZA Lands October 22
In the dataMules
SZA's first collection as Vans' artistic director arrives October 22 — about a year after her appointment — and it starts with the backless shoe. The Knu Skool Mule reworks the chunky skate silhouette without a heel counter in black and white at $115; the Authentic Kickdown, at $110, is a distressed Authentic with a collapsible heel you can fold down into a mule. Backlessness is the whole thesis.
Nature runs through both pairs, and it runs personal: colorful fish graphics swim across the Authentic while tiny insect prints line the Knu Skool insoles — a nod to the marine-biology studies SZA pursued at Delaware State before music took over. The collapsible heel started as a habit, not a concept: her mother kept telling her to stop stepping on the backs of her shoes, so she designed the flaw in.
The campaign, shot by India Sleem in rugged California landscapes, stars SZA alongside skater Zion Wright, and she is working the floor herself — an in-store appearance at Vans Glendale Galleria on October 17, with Foot Locker in Freehold, New Jersey on the 21st. The apparel leans into what the drop calls a 'grandpa fisherman' lane: oversized workwear jackets, relaxed cargo pants, snap shorts, a reversible fishing vest. Drop 2 is already dated — April 8, 2027, with a camo Knu Skool and a split-toe LX Tabi Hiker.
- Backlessness is the thesis: two reworked silhouettes, both wearable as mules.
- Marine-biology motifs trace back to SZA's pre-music studies.
